Alexandrite
Jun 1st 2023
The first Alexandrites were found in the Ural mountains of Russia in 1834. These gemstones were highly sought after due to their ability to change color under different lighting conditions. However, the Ural mines did not produce many of these gems. In 1987, the discovery of Alexandrites in the Minas Gerais mines of Brazil increased their availability and sparked public interest. Alexandrites belong to the chrysoberyl family, which contains chromium in addition to titanium and iron. Chromium is the crucial element responsible for the color change property of chrysoberyls. In daylight or fluorescent light, Alexandrites display a green or bluish-green color, while under incandescent light, they turn purplish-red. This color change phenomenon can also be observed in sunlight.
